be the coherence you want to see!
i keep thinking about this quote in the context of the metacrisis – the tangle of social, ecological, political, and psychological breakdowns that all seem to be feeding into each other. we often talk about these things like it’s one amorphous monster, but i feel a lot of it boils down to something rather simple: a collapse in our ability to be in relationship (with parts of ourself, others, the Other/nature). and if that’s true, then any meaningful response has to be relational in nature.
i say this with affection: among my activist friends -- people doing truly important work for many urgent causes -- i often observe a struggle with this relational side. building bridges across differences, handling the sticky messiness of conflict, staying connected across tension. well-meaning people create movements that fracture because they are not willing or able to focus on the quality of the relational containers in which they're operating, and thus cannot avoid falling into a silo.
Prigogine’s point is basically: you change a system by living a different pattern in miniature. so it behooves us all: be an island of sanity. be a magnetizing fractal force towards a hopeful future.
a small group of diverse people (and yes, this must begin at the smallest of scales) who know how to listen, how to disagree generatively, how to repair tension, how to make meaning together without becoming polarized, becomes a monumental leverage point in a complex system. this kind of group mimics actual ecosystems, which thrive not because of sameness, but because of difference.
